We hit Broome

31st July

We had to leave our perfect campsite on the cliff overlooking the ocean today. I think it is going to have to be something truly amazing to ever top that camp spot.

We headed south towards broome and called into beagle bay to see the seashell church. Everything on the inside of the church had some type of local shell on it, everything from the alter to the edges of the isle. It was really interesting learning about the history of the church and the area especially the fact that the mission in beagle bay was one of the places the government sent the stolen generation.

We rocked in to broome just before lunch with no accommodation booked so we went straight to the visitors centre to see what was available at the camp grounds - yeah that was a big nothing. We were really lucky in the end to get the last three sites at the overflow camping at the seventh day adventist church. It was run by a lovely couple and had very clean amenities and I think we probably had the best site in the place - between two trees that gave us lots of shade although they also gave Paul lots of grief when trying to reverse the camper trailer between them. Once we had set up we headed into town for some lunch and a bit of shopping. Turns out not even the most touristy parts of Broome believe in Sunday afternoon trading so we grabbed some groceries and headed back to camp to see what the others were up to

The Wooldridges and the Burgesses were planning to go and see the dinosaur footprints which can only be seen at low tide. The Garment children were given the choice between dinosaur footprints and going to see Harry potter at the Sun Picture Gardens. Harry won.

The Sun Picture Gardens is the oldest operating cinema in the world. You sit in deck chairs to watch the movie and they even provide tropical strength aeroguard if you need it ( which we did). So we settled in to watch Harry ( I still had misgivings about Sam and Luke seeing it). The fruitbats flying across the screen and the plane coming in to land just added to the fun of the place. In the end Sam and Luke loved it and I am so glad we went it was one of those experiences we may never get again.

After the movie we grabbed some maccas for the kids to eat in the car on the way home and Paul and I splurged and bought some Thai for us - let's just say we would have been better off having maccas too.
